Thinking Goa? Try Konkan instead!
Everyone knows 'Goa' but what makes people want to spend their holidays there? The Beaches? The Booze? The Bikini clad tourists? Or a combination of all the 3 Bs?
But, if you are looking to explore the more beautiful beaches on the western coast, Konkan is a better bet. For Starters, The Konkan Coast is longer than the Goan Coast, and also the variety of beaches in Konkan is more than what you would find in Goa.
Add to this the sparse crowd on the Konkan beaches and you get one step closer to that utopian holiday at the beach. The accomodation at Konkan does not burn a hole in your pocket either, unlike Goa.
Yet, despite its superior features, Goa beats Konkan by a long way when it comes to the volume of tourists it handles. One reason being that the Maharashtra Government does not promote tourism at Konkan, while the Goan Government is extremely aggressive there. As a consequence, few outside Maharsahtra have even heard of Konkan.
But imagine for a moment, that Konkan does get popular, and tourists do pour in large numbers. Wouldn't that destroy the calm, unpopulated atmosphere at Konkan? Sure, revenue from tourism will go up, infrastucture in terms of roads, facilities, will get a definite boost, but surely the charm of Konkan will fade away.
I for one wish that Konkan stays as it is, scenic, beautiful, calm and largely unexplored.
